Fish Fry Fundraiser

When: Saturday, May 19th, 2007 4:00pm - 8:00pm

Where: A. R. ‘Gus’ Barksdale Boys & Girls Club
1015 O’Kelly Street, Conyers. GA 30012

The Grenada Atlanta Association has adopted 4 projects for 2007. As you may be aware, we recently donated $15,000 to our first major project, which benefited an elderly home in Grenada. The proceeds of our previous Fundraiser Dinner went to The Palm Gardens @ Calliste, which will enable them to build a recreation wing for the elderly.

As we continue to strive forward and look for other projects that the Association can embrace. We have identified four (4) such projects for 2007. The first is an immediate assistance to a nine month old child with a rare foot disease. The majority of the other Grenadian Association throughout the United States has combined their efforts towards this worthwhile humanitarian effort.

GAA Donates to Home in Grenada

The Executive Board members of the Grenada_Atlanta Association recently announced that they have made a substantial monetary donation of $15,000.00 to "Palm Gardens at Calliste", a home for the Elderly, in their native island of Grenada.

The Association, whose members reside in the Metro Atlanta Area, came into major play when in 2004, Hurricane Ivan swept across their tiny homeland island of Grenada, damaging and destroying nearly 90% of the buildings on the island.

Grenada, known as the Isle of Spice, and one of the smallest islands in the Eastern Caribbean suffered tremendously when Hurricane Ivan spared nothing. To date, the island is recovering, yet there is much more rebuilding to be done.

Here in Atlanta, The Grenada_ Atlanta Association has been steadily working to do their part to help in the reconstruction of their homeland. They hold an Annual Fundraising dinner, around the second week of November, which enables them to raise funds towards a project they had identified based on its need. The donation will allow the home to construct a recreational room for physical therapy for its occupants. "We believe in the comfort of the Elderly", said the President, Michael Roberts.

The Association's decision to donate the sum of $15,000.00 is an un-selfish and compassionate act that shows the integrity of this group.

This small, but passionate group, known as The Grenada_Atlanta Association, is committed to helping with the rebuilding of Grenada one project at a time.

"Our Goal is to identify some short term projects in the future for support", President Michael Roberts was quoted as saying.

"This gift could not have been possible without the continued support of the Atlanta community. Grenada is on the upswing after the devastation of hurricane Ivan. While the prospect of growth looks great, the needs are still tremendous and our work is ongoing"

CBS Cameraman Killed in Iraq...

Paul Douglas, veteran CBS camera man, died May 29th in an IED attack in Baghdad.

Douglas, who's roots are in Grenada, had worked for CBS News in many countries, including Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Rwanda and Bosnia, since the early 1990s. He leaves behind a wife, two daughters and three grandchildren in London.

"This is a devastating loss for CBS News," said Sean McManus, President, CBS News and Sports, in a CBS statement. "Kimberly, Paul and James were veterans of war coverage who proved their bravery and dedication every single day. They always volunteered for dangerous assignments and were invaluable in our attempt to report the news to the American public."

GAA and the Atlanta community wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to the Douglas family.

The 2005 Grenada Christmas Kids Toy Drop

To All Contributors,

Click to enlargeAs a result of your timely response and generosity we were able to undertake a very fruitful venture. Your benevolence during the month of December enabled us to raise a total of $1,300.00.

Toys were purchased for underprivileged children in Grenada and forwarded to the island for distribution by the Grenada National Youth Council. The organization was able to deliver toys to over 600 children during the holidays and was delighted to be a part of this initiative. The Council reported that the toys were able to bring joy to many families over the holiday.

Click to enlargeBecause of your contributions, we were able to additionally purchase board games for two assisted living homes for the elderly in Grenada – one in St. George’s and the other in St. Patrick’s.

Your support in this effort has contributed to the happiness of many Grenadians. Both the young and elderly were beneficiaries of your kindness in a season when some are forgotten. We know that the holiday season was a busy time in your life, but you took the time to care and for that we are most grateful.

Thank you for coming through at a time when you were most needed.

Lashley John

Struggling In Grenada...

WINDSOR FOREST, Grenada -- For the past year, Walton Joseph, a septuagenarian nutmeg farmer, has lived in a shack made of plastic sheeting. He has no electricity, and his running water is the rain that trickles uninvited through his metal roof.
The shack sits on a cement foundation that is the only remains of Joseph's home, which was swept away with his tiny nutmeg grove when Hurricane Ivan struck last Sept. 7, pummeling Grenada the way Katrina devastated New Orleans.
